Story

Born in Graz on the

31st of December 1946

The only daughter of Margarete Fluch who passed away tragically at the young age of 25 years, a 9-year old Gabi was left to be raised by her grand-mother, aunts and uncles.

Although she had ties to different parts of Austria – most notably to Styria where she was raised and much later, where she passed away on 07/07/2021 – a significant part of her life was also spent in Carinthia, in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee.

Her interests were many and varied: from culture and history, to philosophy and policy. She also had a keen interest in politics, having played an active role in her younger years. She never shied away from a discussion and always brought interesting opinions and well-reasoned arguments to the table. And while she had a clear preference for the Social Democratic Party and its principles, it did not prevent her from being open to others and their ideas.

Working in the admissions department in the role of Head of studies and examinations at the University of Klagenfurt, Gabi was able to touch the lives of many people on a daily basis, both students and staff alike until her retirement. And so, it is only fitting that she continue to do so, even after her death.

We have therefore chosen to sponsor a Klagenfurt University scholarship (2024-2026 cohort) to honour Gabi. The hope is that it will benefit someone who is passionate about their studies and who will use the coming years to engage in critical thinking, to seek a better understanding of others' points of view, and to broaden and deepen their knowledge.

In loving memory of our dearest Gabi.
